Myopia

Myopia also known as short-sightedness is a vision condition in which people can see close/near objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred.

The incidence of myopia (short-sightedness) is expected to rise significantly as lifestyle changes, with children taking part in more up-close work activities like using digital devices (smart phones, tablets and laptops) for studying, reading and spending less time outdoors. Increasing myopia puts patients at a higher risk of developing retinal tears, detachments and glaucoma.

Hereditary, behavioural and environmental factors also play a part.

Has your child’s prescription gone from -0.75 to over -1.50 in the first year of them wearing glasses? Or have you seen a prescription jump every time you’ve been to the optometrists….. “My child started at -1.00 now they are -3.50 in the space of a few years!” does that sound like a common story to you??? If so we can help!

We have three methods to reduce the progression of myopia! Eyedream (orthokeratology) rigid contact lenses, Hoya Miyosmart Spectacle Lenses and Coopervision MiSight soft Contact Lenses

Eyedream for Myopia

Imagine waking up with clear, comfortable vision in the morning!

Background

Since 2005 Kirit Patel and his team have been pioneers in slowing down the rate of progression of Myopia in children and teenagers mainly. Radlett Opticians now has one of the biggest patient bases wearing the Eyedream lenses (Ortho Keratology).

These lenses offers patients the freedom and confidence to participate in activities such as swimming, playing sports and outdoor games without the restrictions of spectacles or contact lenses.

Increasing myopia puts patients at a higher risk of developing retinal tears, detachments and glaucoma.

Prescription range

A spherical prescription range of -0.75D to -5.00D

An astigmatism prescription of up to -2.50D

How does it work

Eyedream lenses gently reshape the curvature of the eye overnight creating a slightly flatter cornea.

The corneal changes are measured by a topographer.

Upon waking, the slight change in cornea curvature is enough to create clear, sharp vision for the duration of the day. In addition, it is believed that the refocusing of light on the peripheral retina slows down the progression of myopia in children.

At Radlett Opticians we have also utilised Eyedream lenses for patients:

  • Who can not tolerate soft lenses during the daytime

  • Suffer with dry eyes

  • Even patients who struggle with varifocal contact lenses/spectacles.

A Testament to Eyedream Contact Lenses

My son actually woke up before I left for work this morning! (What a miracle!) I watched him do the lenses ritual and he did not have any problems. He also then immediately told me he could see the tops of the trees much clearer than before! Thank you for your support Kirit.
